The Lakes...

A lake of Canberra ... as fake as your leather jacket ... if you've got one

Fake objects in a fake lake

Algae in the fake lake ... probably also fake

by now you must have noted the dissapointment...

Ducks in the fake lake ... no, they were real enough; they ate Flynn's yummy chocolate cake.

Feet were real enough too ... still attached to me. And believe me, I was scared when taking this photo.

You want more? I'll give you more ... More of Canberra!

If only we were allowed to climb it...

Remember the "turtle", ladies?

Streets of the "City" of Canberra. Note the quotation marks

They won't turn around for the camera!!!

THEY HAVE FIRE HYDRANTS IN THE STREETS!!! ... (yellow ones)

at a loss for words

Flynn's request of a good news made me realise that it's hard to think up a good news when one has just had an exam where one wasted 1.5 hours of 2 hours trying to implement a diagram that makes very little sense. To top it of, one's program did not run, showing 2 errors and 2 warnings. Let's not forget the fact that one also did not had enough time to comment enough. One cannot express enough frustration (without seeming to be a nutcase) for one's own incompetency and studpidity.

But why, I ask you, all this frustration, and over an exam worth only 30%, when there are bigger fish to fry. One is failing one's life exams while trying to pass academic exams. One should get one's priorities straightened.

If I had an older brother he would have been 23 years old this May. And he possibly would have been fairer than me or the boy. And he possibly would have been doing his last year(s) of university. And I possibly would have had the pleasure of looking for my very own bhabi. And if he would not have been gallent, I would have made him so to the best of my ability (because the world is severely lacking in it). But not, I haven't an older brother. And all those possibilities had vanished 22 years and 358 days before today.

Assalamu alaikum boro bhaia. As indifferent as I am to your not being with us now, I'm glad to know where you are now.

Btw, this last news has nothing to do with birthday celebration of a brother long gone. Only that my cousin and my boro bhaia were born on the same day, only about 10/12 hours apart.

...never got to call anyone boro bhaia. Perhaps for the best...

Box within a box

It was a box of some sort. 3m by 4m by 3m in dimension. Oh sure, it had a door and a window ….. and yet it didn’t. The heavy air thumped inside the box – thump…thump…bang…Bang…BANG…BANG!!!!

An existing mind in a non-existent space screams, “STOP THE BANGING!!!

No one hears. No one was there to hear. Besides, the words were not spoken.
The mind is aware.

Moments later a box within the box feels an impact … an impact of fury … leaving just such a mark … broken splinters … blood. It would not heal … it would never heal
The mind knows.

Somewhere Only We Know...

Yes, I realise that I've posted this once already but I can't get over this song. This repeat is to revive it on my blog...

Somewhere Only We Know

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?

AA,

Most people in life have to go through the painful process of living several decades before figuring out a word that would describe them almost perfectly (since no word can describe a person absolutely perfectly). However, I've been spared that trouble and after living only two decades and a few months, I have already figured out the word that describes the entity that is me upto this point of my life.

Since I'm not going to say what that word is, it goes without saying that anyone who can figure out what it is gets a lollipop.*

Something about the two E's and abstract reasoning...

E1: I was cracking eggs into bhatbhaji before you were even born.
E2: I was born before you were born.
E1: Exactly, that’s how long ago it was.

"Research Student Gets Arrested"

This unfortunate incident had occured some years back to a research student in the Health Science department.

Having received the instructions of a research assignment that determines the percentage of drivers who come to a complete stop at a stop sign when they are driving alone or with passenger, this research student was concerned that standing next to a stop sign with a clipboard in his hand will bias his findings. So he looked for a a stop sign located near a bushy area near the road.

Having found such a stop sign, he crawled behind the bush with his clipboard, pen and a pair of binoculars (to make sure there there is or is not any passengers in the car). After about 15 minutes of research police arrived on the scene and arrested the youth, refusing to believe that he was conducting a research.

Temporarily behind bars, the research student made a phone call to one of his professors, who had to come down to the police station and bail him out.

What had happened? Who informed the police? And why was he arrested for conducting a harmless research?

It so happens that across the street from the stop sign was a bathroom window. It was indeed the house owner who made the call to the police when noticing a young male crawling into a bush with a pair of binoculars and looking in the direction of the bathroom window, while his/her 15-year-old daughter was taking a shower. Now, it is oh-so-very-much hoped that the research student was completely oblivious to that fact.

AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Tell me you laughed!

This story was told by my DHR professor to point out to us that "Be careful when you're doing research that you don't get arrested." The humour continues. After he told us this, a guy from the class asked in a serious voice, "So do we call you if we happen to get arrested?", followed by snickers all around the class. Lesson learnt. EVERYONE took something away from that tutorial.

Allah's Mercy is on you br. Nestor

Assalamu alaikum all,

A very good news I received recently:

For a while a Chinese guy in my uni has been good friends with a few CMS members and has frequently come to our events since last year. He even came to our Iftar party last year and made the gestures of prayer with the guys when they were praying. I'm happy to announce that, Alhamdulillah, he has taken the shahadah during last holiday. May Allah's mercy be on him always and may He guide more people to Islam through him. He was wondering about when prayer time is last Thursday (CMS BBQ day) and saying "Have to do wudu, man, wudu."

CMS BBQ
It was a success! It was informational and fun - what better way to give da'wah on campus? We had a Sheikh coming in (who didn't sound so controversial as I heard him to be) who gave us a talk about youth and utilising it. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the entire talk because of a salad problem, the solution to which you are sure to find amusing: We had salad ... great! ... but we had no dressing ... not so great. So, thanks to one hyper-excited shura member we managed to make a salad dressing consisting of vinegar, two laimoons ($0.60 from bite me) and salt satchets (also from bite me, but free). Mr. President, knowing nothing of this concoction, asked, "Mmm, what dressing is this, Greek or Italian?" -- .... ??? ...... AAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Due to some strange work of my nature, I get an urge to blog more and study less whenever I have exams coming up. I'm going to skedaddle out of here and hopefully not come back before Monday night...... yeah, right!!!

First time for everything...

Oooh, how could I possibly forget to record the first day I start driving??!! That was yesterday, and boy was that fun. Now I truly know why people go drag racing …(don’t worry folks, I ain’t tryin’ that … yet) …I just hope that my instructor wouldn’t have to keep her hands on the steering wheel or press her brake so much next time.

A topic of a different nature:I've been blog-hopping lately and I've stepped on the blogs of some quiet intellectual people. They come across as knowledgables in Islam and practicing Muslims. But almost all of them have at least one entry in their blog that their branching minds are branching out a little too much, into the darker side of the forest. It's dissappointing even though I'm aware of the fact that all of us concentrate on some good things so much that we get a little lax on some others. No one is safe from this. It's so hard to walk the middle path.

Oh! I almost forgot to mention that I didn't crash into anything on my very first day of driving! Alhamdulillah! ... Well, I hadn't really expected to do that. I mean, it's pretty silly to put the gear on drive when you're backing out of the garage/driveway, which a certain someone did.

Oddity

It seems that I'm the only one keeping up with my blog when all else have fled. Nonetheless, let me share with you a few things odd and random that have been captured with my phone:

Aaaah, my Bird Brain Hugo. I miss him ever so much. This is the picture of him sitting in the shoebox, on her way to an unknown land, afraid and unaware of what fate awaits her (the last of which was to see the hungry face of a cat. ... Waaahahahaha! ... it was all my fault ....... *sniff* ...

Now that I've grown attatched to birds,
<--- these are the next batch of birds I plan to get. They're finches; about 10cm in size from head to tail. A very cute bunch of birds. They sit all squeezed next to each other. But when I can get them is another matter. It depends entirely on when I get a job and when I eventually make a big bird house in our backyard.
Can you imagine? - 4 finches for the price of 1 budgie! ... (No offence, Hugo)
(Photo taken from one of the local pet shops)

Another finch. Loking at this bird from such an angle, you'd think the name is inappropriate, but the other birds in the cage (of grayish colour) have a red line on their throat, as if their throats have been cut, hence the name "Cut-Throat Finch". I'm thinking of keeping a range of different finches, including these.

If any Bangali does not know what this flower is, you don't deserve to know all things beautiful in Bangladesh. This one is from our backyard.

Meet Cocky - the CMS mascot. Beat that SUMSA; I don't see your mascot. I've already said much about him so I'll refrain from repeating myself. Btw, he's not a freak bird taken from the local freak show; he's grooming himself.

About time ...

It's about time I stopped bludging around and start taking things seriously. Who agrees? C'mon, lemme have a show of hands ... - ... oook, I see countless hands.

Life is random, and hence, so is my post

Assalamu alaikum all,

Firstly, I thought I'd try the different-colour-each-subject approach in this post. And just for amusement, I've put a secret message in my post. Anyone that can tell me what it is, gets a lollipop ... even if I have to parcell it overseas. I think I just saved a couple of lollipops for myself. And yes, this is the secret message.

Did you girls know that "Welcome" also has its shades of gray? I mean, there's the term "more than welcome". And here I was, thinking that there's only "You're welcome" and "You're not welcome". By the way, my fellow blogger buddies are all welcome here.

... So there I was, walking down to the bus stop from the station when I noticed an unfamiliar girl who was wearing a top of a very familiar pattern. And here it is...

Anyone else recognise it? That's the pattern of my scarf!!! THE ONE I WAS WEARING STANDING NEXT TO HER ON A LONG WAIT FOR THE BUS!!! Aiiiiii!!!

No more time to stay and chat. I have things to do, people to see. Speaking of which, doe apu and I are going to have our first Tajweed lesson today, Alhamdulillah. Let's see how it goes.

Ah, missed a news. Penalope is coming over next Friday. Plans to make Pizza and give her a little taste of Bangladeshi food too, in what I like to think of as 'a mini reunion'.

Until next time then. Toodles.

Ma'assalama

Ps. Catherine has a skull on her dp.

Born Identity-less

Watching a lot of death kinda makes a person start acting like a zombie, eh? Well, I happened to watch a fair bit of The Bourne Identity - low level romance (surprisingly, Alhamdulillah) lotta action, high level violance (for any Muslim/ah at any rate), few deaths. Few deaths, but those few kills mercilessly piled up in my mental morgue tonight (may be writing this is releasing some burden). And thus I come to the decision that this is the last "big people action movie" I'll watch. Mind you, that's not to say that I'm turning towards the pinken' flowery movies, whatever of those are out there.

I, Emu Martian, Hereby Give Allowence To Anyone Of Slapping Me Silly If I Ever Bring Up The Suggestion Of Watching A "Big People Action Movie", Or Even Speaking About Such A Film.

The request is ironic, I know; but it's to serve as a reminder ... in a cheery way.

Aiiiii, I'm about to have a nervous break-down 'cos I've started to replace cartoons with "big people action movies"...

ps. ya' know, writing feels different when there's no one reading...

Salams all, young and beautiful (...or otherwise)

.... Now, where to begin ...... of course! The very beginning!!

The very beginnins was unlike any other holiday morning. I had to rise dark and early (like any other day) but had to stay up and rush about, for I had less than an hour to get ready for a 6:55 AM train ... did I mention the fact that it was AM? ... Anyhow, not surprisingly, I missed my train, but managed to get to uni 5 minutes after our president. So, O'week begins ... but noooo, it appeared that we were misinformed! O'week wasn't supposed to start before Monday!! So what to dooooo ..... Well, we set up a table anyway when all of us got there (until which point I was cockatoo-sitting Da'wah The CMS Mascot .... that's right folks, Cumbo MS has a mascot; take that SUMSA, what with your high and mighty tower-looking and intimidating buildings and its peoples .... *sticking out tongue*)

Anywho, we thought about spray-painting the cockatoo orange, at least it's .... what? - crown(?). But we didn't have the resources, nor did we want to intoxicate the poor bird.... And boy-oh-boy, what a bird it was.

.... Before I go any further, does any of you think that I have a voice like a bird???? That's what a passer-by thought when Da'wah yelled "Hello!".

Moving on ... Da'wah's vocab includes - Hello; Hello, Cocky; Hahaha (when someone laughs); *cough* (when someone coughs); and apparently some swear words, but, Alhamdulillah, he seemed wise enough to keep from saying those in the line of action. Oh and he makes occasional jumps of joy, and he'll dance, moving his head from side to side, to any music or beat, and will nod his head like a silly bird if you're silly enough to nod your's in front of him. Heh, gives a whole new meaning to the term bird-brain. I highly recommend that anyone who can to come and see this attraction on Monday.

Believe it or not, we actually got a few students signing up, including non-Muslims, because of Da'wah. We got a few sisters to sign up already, Alhandulillah. Insha Allah there will be more next week.

And here ends the Cockatoo/O'Week chapter.

... nuckles crack ... hands stretch ... sit back down, there's more ... much more ...

Let's come to visiting the Flynn Residency, already briefed by Flynn herself, and believe you me, it was indeed a briefing. Apart from Flynns queasinesseseses, loss of apatite, Emperor's New Groove (Boom, baby!) and the creme de le creme, the tip o' the iceberg - the stray budgie ..... now would you look at that! That just about sums it all up. Flynn, you silly dudette, you stole my show. No wait, you missed out the part about your caring mother found another person to feed after being unsuccessful with you. Really Flynn, I recommend that you see a doctor ... although I would recommend crossing the seas to do so.

Well the budgie being introduced, I'll tell you all about him. He, of course, is a he; and he has been scared out of his wits till this afternoon, when he finally came to a somewhat doubtful conclusion that I wasn't going to cook him up and serve him to his huntress (previously pictured). But let me tell you one thing - I'm not in the cruel practice of keeping a bird in a cage, so as soon as Budgie (suggest some names peoples) can fly, if he can at all, he's off into the wilderness of I'burn ... unless one of Flynn's neighbours claims him.

All that said, let's now come to the final and third chapter of my eventful day. The train-ride home. I managed to pull myself into a discussion with a Christian elderly lady and a younger man, who, I later learned, was a revert. Practially the whole conversation she was insisting that we turn to Jesus as our saviour, and would hear nothing else. Imagine her surprise when she found out that Mr. Max (that was his name) was a revert from Christianity. Her delight sure scaled extremely negative. Anyhow, when we attempted to tell her the Islamic concept of Allah and 'Isa (A), she attempted to sing to me!!! We hardly got any discussion done, but at least I met a revert.

Apparently, he was a Arab Christian and become a Muslim a couple of years back; his parents are also Muslims, though not fully practicing ... yet. An international Med student at SB/Flynn's uni, he's currently deferring to work and save up enough money to pay for his course next year.

..... streeeeeeeeeeeetch ... *scratch scratch* ... eehehehe ... please tell me you knew that that was a joke ...

"Enough said" I tell myself. "But it feels as if something is missing..." ... at this point you, the reader (unless you've falled asleep), should say to - "Uh-huh. Well, that was a novel; a very bad one, at that". And yet, here I sit, convinced that I have indeed left somethings out. I can pin-point, but I'd rather not as it's getting late and this post is getting waaay past it's limit.

Salamu alaikum and goodnight from me to me.

Yours troolee,

Emooooooooooooo..............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............

There's A Funnel Web In Our Garden

I think there's a funnel web in our garden. I took a few photos of it that I'll post up sometime later iA. I poked at the top of the hole and made it come halfway out of its little funnel. I'm going back tomorrow iA and take some more photos if it's still there.

But father dear doesn't believe that it's a funnel web. He can't believe the fact that funnel webs are one of the most common and the most dangerous spider in Sydney that lives in your backyard and still you don't hear of so many people dying from spider bites. But there's a reason for that. Funnel webs aren't vicious; they won't come and attack you for no reason. If they see some huge thing walking around, they have their little holes to get into.... of course there's an exception with the mature males, which pretty much lead a homeless existance. Although it'd be a worry in summer when they sometimes just decide to pop up in the house for a visit after heavy rain.

Anyway, enough lesson about spiders. I do, however, have a little doubt that it might be a different type of spider that also lives in holes in the ground. It'll be dissappointing to find that our garden doesn't have the most dangerous spider of Sydney; I've been looking for them for soooooo long.

Anywho, I'm hungry and I'm gonna go have my first dinner.

One, two, skip a few ... ninety-nine, a hundred

From "The Life of Muhammad (S)", by Abdul Hameed Siddiqui:
....
"As types of the ideal Arab hero we may take Shanfara of Azd and his comrade in foray, Ta'abbata Sharr. Both were brigands, outlaws, swift runners, and excellent poets:
...
............Of the former it is said that he was captured when a child from his tribe by the Banu
............Salaman, and brought up among them; he did not learn his origin until he had grown up,
............when he vowed vengeance against his captors, and returned to his own tribe. His oath
............was that he would slay a hundred men of Salaman; he slew ninety-eight, when an
............ambush of his enemies succeeded in taking him prisoner. In the struggle one of his
............hands was hewn off by a sword stroke, and, taking it in the other, he flung it in the
............face of a man of Salaman and killed him, thus making ninety-nine. Then he was
............overpowered and slain, with one still wanting to make up his number. As his skull lay
............bleaching on the ground, a man of his enemies passed by that way and kicked with his
............foot; a splinter of bone entered his foot, the wound mortified, and he died, thus
............completing the hundred.*
............
* A Literary History of the Arabs (Cambridge 1933), p. 79."
.....
.....
.....
...might just be a made up story, who knows. Makes an interesting tale nonetheless...
